Peak Fitness Knightdale Update?
I wonder what’s going on with Peak Fitness in Knightdale. My wife and I were so excited to hear that Peak Fitness was coming to Knightdale. After all, the old Winn Dixie store was becoming an eye sore and having a Gym less than 2 miles from our home was very attractive. After all, my wife and I are always trying to find time to excerise. She enjoys group exercises and I have always loved basketball.
I was thrilled when I walked out of Lowes Food one afternoon and saw an ad for Peak Fitness Knightdale under my windshield. I called my wife and dropped a few hints that a membership to Peak Fitness in Knightdale will be a great Christmas gift. It was right after Thanksgiving and a call to Peak Fitness confirmed that it would be opening in Knightdale in January of 08. A few days before Christmas, my wife had to “run some errands.” It turns out that she went to the Peak Fitness Office in Knigtdale to get more information and sign up. Again, they assured her that it would be opening in January of ‘08.
Christmas Day came and you guessed it. My wife gave me a gym membership to the Knightdale Location of Peak Fitness. In fact, she went ahead and purchased a gym membership for herself as well. They did a little hard selling trying to tell her that they don’t do anything less than 2 year commitments but for her, they would make an exception. All they asked is that she not tell anyone else about her “deal.”
January came and went without the opening of the Knightdale Peak Fitness. We called and asked for an explanation of the delay. They said that they were a few weeks behind. They told us that after all, we can’t expect people to work over Christmas and New Years. Hmm I thought to myself, did those holidays just spring up unexpectedly? Had Peak Fitness not accounted for that in they construction of the Knightdale location? I was a little frustrated at Peak but I knew that it’s hard to have solid deadlines in construction. I figured that I could live with waiting a few more weeks for the Knightdale location to open.
Again, weeks came and went without Peak Fitness opening their Knightdale location. We called Peak again for another update. After all, we drove by the old Winn Dixie building and saw nothing being done. Another call to Peak Fitness Knightdale came with another excuse. This time it was delay because their trouble with Knigtdale and getting the appropriate permits. I was left scratching my head because by this time, another Knightdale gym announced that they were going to be soon opening their doors. This one was Planet Fitness. They were building their gym from the ground up. Surely Peak Fitness would be opening before Planet Fitness. After all, Peak Fitness’s location in Knightdale already had a shell. All they had to do was pluming and walls.
In February, I called Peak Fitness again. This time they said that they didn’t expect their Knightdale location to be open until March. Honestly, at this point, I don’t know what to think. The last time I drove by the Winn Dixie building in Knightdale, it was still at the same point that it was months ago. I almost don’t want to call Peak Fitness again because I don’t want to be disappointed again. Does anyone know when Peak Fitness Knightdale will actually open? Does any one have any inside information? I am beginning to grow frustrated with Peak. At this point, I wish I hadn’t of signed a contract with them. After all, I am beginning to think that Planet Fitness will open their Knightdale location far before Peak Fitness.

I read your Peak Fitness blog post on the WRAL website and I’m really glad I saw it. I ride by that location and never see anyone working on the facility. No doubt, other citizens in Knightdale are beginning to question when, if ever they are going to open. I’ll be back to read your updates.

Worked out at the Planet Fitness this morning, best decision I made choosing them over Peak. I doubt the Peak ever even opens.

I just called because I too bought a membership there and was told it would be open mid-May (this was in early February). I was just told that they are putting the floors in and they hope to be open around the end of May. No firm date. There have certainly been a lot of delays.
May 21st, 2008 at 6:01 pm
If you just want to be done with it you can get your money refunded. We are going through the same thing right now. I was told by an employee that they need more money to complete construction and that is why things are moving so slowly.
We are trying to hold out because the gym is 2 miles from our house as well but as the months drag on its getting very frustrating. The latest I heard was June 6th, but we’ll have to wait and see.
May 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 am
We are in the same boat; when we joined in February, we were told it would be open mid-April. After that date passed, they started giving us the excuse that permits were being held up, etc.
On Monday, we went to the sales office to take a tour of what they have done. It is amazing; they claim they will be open June 6th (they also claim that is the first time they have given a date, which is BS), however there were at the time 2 (yes 2!) people working in the facility. The floors are not down (although they did make sure to point out the cushioning in place for the group fitness area, I was not impressed with the fact that the only thing they could point out was a thin layer of cushioning considering how long the construction has been going on, but with 2 workers, maybe that is an accomplishment
)
Things that are not done:
Flooring
Power outlets for equipment!!!!!
Cable and wiring for sound and tv
No toilets or showers installed!!!!!
No walls build (there are a couple of frames in place)
Front desk area is framed
NO EQUIPMENT (they claim all of the equipment is ready to be installed and is currently in storage in Charlotte)
It doesn’t take a genius to leap to the conclusion that they will once again miss their date, if they ever open at all. The problem with getting any type of refunds will be that they are so cash strapped, they can’t pay contractors, so I really don’t see them refunding those who have paid for a membership in full in advance (I feel really stupid for doing this now).
Hopefully things will work out, Planet Fitness is not our type of gym. We like variety in classes, equipment, etc. The Peak is so close to our new home, it is really our only choice at this time.

My boyfriend and I just joined this gym last Saturday. We were told the delay was due to multiple reasons, mostly not getting permits needed.
We were promised by John Lucas(GM of this facilty) that the opening date is June 9th.There were workers inside the building that day…good sign. Will have to drive by soon to see how coming along, since the 9th is right
around the corner.

Well i just wanted to update you guys on the happenings, i have spoken with one of the representatives at Peak Fitness Knightdale and according to her the June 6th date has now changed to June 16th because of some inspections problems they have had !!! I was told that they have the equipment scheduled to come in but that inspection had to be rescheduled for around the 16th and while she said that was not something she would put her life on, she also said that if anyone wanted to cancel they would have to go to the site location and get the paper work and send it in to the corporate office to have their money refunded. I kind of wonder about that and how the rules apply for those who have purchased a membership over 30 days ago, well i guess if the gym is not open for business yet, that should not apply, but you may want to ask about that…maybe cancellation fees etc??? I guess all we can do is just wait and see what happens, i just wish they would have their stuff together, they are losing money and getting peoples hopes up for nothing it seems !!! Hey there is alway the downtown Raleigh location, parking is scarce, but at least they keep their word and they are up and running !!!
June 16th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Well June 16th is here and big shocker, the gym still isn’t open. Don’t buy the excuses and there have been many. I was told over and over that the city of Knightdale is dragging their feet and its impossible to get inspections, permits etc.
So I called the city of Knightdale and the permit office told me that they have a 24 hour turn around time and they have not had any “back log”. I was also told by this office that Planet Fitness started later than Peak and did their gym from the ground up and they’ve been open for quite some time now.
Every time we call its a new excuse and the people you talk to want to push the blame on the boss “well I don’t know, thats just what we’re being told”
So I’m disgusted by Peak and wonder if they will ever open. I’m very tired of people trying to pass the buck and lying. Just be honest enough to say you can’t pay your contractors. There is another blog from a contractor who can’t get paid by Peak. Yeah, good luck to us getting a refund.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Amazing. I sent a letter to them telling them I want to cancel my contract. That was months ago. I have not heard anything from them.
June 21st, 2008 at 3:48 am
We were told it would be open June 18th when we bought our membership on the 11th. When we call on the 15th i spoke with someone and they seemed shocked that i was told that. He said it would be at a minimum another week and a half. I’m going to call back next week and if they are not opening i’m going to request my membership be canceled.
July 5th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Great News peak is finally going to open on July 14….. Everything is done ecxept the movig of the equipment from the old CVS into the Peak Building. I have waited for this day since January. The place is awesome though, if you have not stopped at the office in the past couple of weeks and actually went inside their building, you need to it really looks like a gym now, and it will definatley reassure anyone who has bought a membership or thought of purchasing one. To all those who have become mad and went to planet, I did the same thing I am at planet until peak opens then I am going to cancel. I like planet, peak though has so much more to offer even if it is a couple dollars more.
July 7th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I to have been signed up since Jan. I just called them to get an update and guess what…they plan on opening next week. This must be the longest week in history since this is what I’ve been told every week for the past 2 months. They are still waiting on the electrician to finish up. The last I remember, the lights worked just fine when Winn-Dixie was there. What is the big problem. They have put all the equipment in the old CVS store next door. Just open that up and let us work out in there.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I joined in March and was told it would be open by the end of May. I have called several times since then. Just keet getting excuses. I called twice in the last week and a half. They keep telling me they keep failing inspection. And that the cleaning crew would be in there in a day or so. That was 2 weeks ago. Nothing is being done. I want my membership cancelled so I can join another gym.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I bought my membership back in November, and was told that peak would be open in January. I am very disappointed that being in July they are still not open. Mind you I am upset by this and hate the delays, but considering I have not paid a dime to them since November what else can I do. I am thankful that Planet came into Knightdale, because I joined there and only pay $10 and don’t have a contract.
I went into Peak Fitness and took another tour. I am amazed at all the work that has been done. They assured me that they are opening next week, although was hoping for Thursday or Friday of this week.
The lockers are being installed (the Woman’s are done), the TV’s are going up (8 are already hanging)… too much to list. if you go by the old CVS buiding, all the equipment is packed in there. I really think this is it, they will open soon.
I am actually going into Planet and cancelling my membership with them. I feel like I haven’t lost anything in the end, and it will be worth the wait (even if it was for 9 months).
Everyone who thinks it’s easier to build from the ground up is crazy. Have you seen that Old Winn Dixie? It’s older than dirt, I am sure they had a lot to alter/fix to make current. I have seen places built from ground up and also been invloved in “flipping”. They are two different worlds. Flipping was worse by far.
TO EVERYONE WAITING: You won’t regret the wait, stick it out another week, you won’t regret it.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I’m a member of Peak in Charlotte and I’m moving to Knightdale. If this club is anything like the new one’s in Charlotte, its worth the wait.
July 12th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I have been calling about 2 times a week now since June, and like everyone else has stated, they are always just a week away. Last week they said they would be opening this Monday (the 14th). I called just now to verify and surprise, its been pushed back to wednesday now. I’ve been a member since January, two days delay might not seem like much, but the story is getting old. I’m seriously wondering if it will open this year.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I’m waiting for them to open before i even consider signing up. Has anyone heard? Are they open?
July 15th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Contacted Peak again today to see if the Gym was sill opening tomorrow, and it has again been pushed back. This time they didn’t say that they failed the inspection that was scheduled for today, they just said it had been overlapped into tomorrow, with an electrical inspection for Thursday, and if all goes well (BIG IF) then they will open Monday. I can’t express how disgusted I am with this now…. just gets worse, and they don’t really seem to care. They just say “We’ll see you (insert promised day here)” and hang up.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Looked like the fire alarm system was being tested today (Wednesday, 7/16). I was told all the same dates, etc, as everyone here. My wife and I joined Planet Fitness, which we are very happy with. Hopefully your waiting will be well worth it for you with Peak, and I mean that sincerely (my friends know me for my sarcasm
.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
just called again. They said the electrician should be in Tuesday and to call back that night or Wednesday morning and they could give me an opening date. I’m fed up. I asked if I could cancel and they said yes. I gave my credit card info when I signed up, but nothing was charged yet. I’m going to Planet fitness!
July 28th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Spoke with Peak Thursday after I saw they were moving equipment in finally, to see if they were still opening on friday (25th) They said they had yet again failed inspection (Earlier they said they had passed all inspections) and that they were to have an electrician in working through the weekend so they could pass there inspection scheduled for Monday (Today). I called to see if they passed and if they were planning on opening this week, thats when they told me they weren’t scheduled to have an inspection this week and maybe they would be opening next monday (4th). Gets better and better every week
July 31st, 2008 at 2:22 pm
i just called and have been calling every single week since joining. I wish I had stumbled upon this before joining. however, I was told Monday. I am really upset and how do you get in touch with corporate office?? i have sent two e-mails asking to withdraw my membership too.
July 31st, 2008 at 2:57 pm
okay…after a little digging I found the following number
Corporate number: 704-439-2705
Records department: 704-896-5521
i called and spoke to someone who says membership can be cancelled up to 3 days after the club opens. I think my husband and I will join planet fitness instead. i don’t like the sneakiness i am seeing with peak already and it disappoints me because i enjoyed working out in the wake forest rd. location, but the gas driving over there isn’t worth it. i am calling to cancel now. hopefully the information was legit.

We would love to have anyone that is interested come by and check us out. We have been open now for 5 1/2 years by the same owner. We offer a very personal 30 minute workout. We are always available to help you while you work out. We also help you to set goals in the begining and weigh and measure you every month to track your progress. August 26th & 27th we are having an open house and offering a really great special to join. Right now you can still join and get the rest of the summer FREE.
I hope everyone is able to work things out with Peak, it sounds like a real mess.

I am a Peak fitness member at the Raleigh location, but the Knightdale location is closer. Is it still not open??? I just looked on their website. They don’t even list Knightdale in the “coming soon” section.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Just called @ 3:46 and they guy said they will be open either later this week or the first of next week which is the 11th. Still waiting to see that happen. He told me to call back tomorrow. I also am a member of the one on Falls of Neuse and have been waiting for the one in Knightdale to open being that I live not even 5 mins. from it. So hopefully sometime this month.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Just spoke to them a minute ago, was told they still haven’t passed the electrical inspection, so they hope to open Monday…
August 11th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Peak Fitness of Knightdale is officially open as of today around 2:00. They will reopen tomorrow morning at 8 am. HOWEVER, for those moms like me in which Peak is the ONLY option because of childcare … childcare is NOT up and running. According to Peak officials, they plan to have it open Wednesday or Thursday (hours will be 9-1 and 4-8)…we’ll see!!!
August 17th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
I talked to one of the individuals who was located at that Knightdale site where they sign folks up. Some time in April, that individual told me that the facility will be up and running DEFINITEY IN MAY. I talked to him again sometime in early June and he said that they had a few things to take care of but it will be done in June. After going by there at the end of June and still seeing that it wasn’t completed, I just said the hell with it. Here it is, the middle of August and after all the excuses, it still isn’t done. I’ve been a member of the spa since it was Spa Health Club. If it wasn’t for that, I would given up on Peak Fitness a long time ago.
IF YOU WORK AT PEAK FITNESS AT THE KNIGHTDALE FACILTY AND YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE PROVIDE AN EXPLAINATION OF THE DELAY’S. I JUST WANT TO HEAR YOUR LAME A@# EXCUSES SOME MORE.
August 18th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Is it open yet? My account has been charged for this month?
August 18th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Mikey: As far as I know, the Knightdale location is now open. However, I went by yesterday (Sunday) to check things out. The sign says that Sunday hours are 9am-1pm. I went by around 10:30am and it was closed. I called around noon and no one answered.
August 18th, 2008 at 9:55 am
The gym is open, I’ve been a few times and its great, except for Sunday. I was there around 11am, and they were not open, people had been waiting there for a while hoping it would open, but apparently never did. Hopefully after theyve been open a little while things will run more smoothly, I know they are still working on the inside a bit, and group classes are supposed to start September first. We’ll see, but atleast they are open now. Not sure what the deal with Sunday was
August 27th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Peak has a reputation for selling memberships to unopened gyms, then never opening them, and not refunding money. Its a pretty scummy business from what I have seen. They are being sued left and righ as well:

Showed up to the gym this morning, and was met by management at the door. All equipment was moved out overnight and they are officially closed with no warning. They said there was not enough business, and they were transferring services to Planet Fitness. Par for the course with Peak I guess, this Gym was doomed from the get go
May 7th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Couldn’t believe how fast they closed. We really need a gym in Knightdale that will stay open and has daycare and classes. I would pay more a month for it and I know that there are alot of others that would too! I have been a member for two years and I am very disappointed in Peak
